OCCC Nursing Student Finds Relief with $5,000 in ‘College Cash’

“I’ve always wanted to help people,” said Goodness Emeka, Oklahoma City Community College nursing major. She’s one of five, $5,000 TFCU “College Cash” winners selected out of 4,336 entries in 2024.

Goodness attends OCCC and works as a lab assistant in the community outreach program, helping people who are taking English as a second language. “I consider myself fluent in two languages, English and Igbo – the language my family speaks from Nigeria. But I want to get better at Spanish and French, too,” explained Goodness.

“I believe nursing is its own language – the language of empathy. Understanding others without words is how you can help them,” shared Goodness. “Walking in the shoes of a nurse just feels comfortable to me. When I’m in a hospital I feel like I am home.”

Winning the TFCU $5,000 “College Cash” contest was “a relief,” said Goodness. “I was about to take on a second job. Now I can pay my personal bills and college fees and focus on my nursing career.”

The nursing student’s dream is to work toward becoming a nurse practitioner. “I aspire to acquire what I set my mind to,” said Emeka.

TFCU encourages students attending Oklahoma colleges, universities and technical schools to enter the $5,000 “College Cash” contest during back-school-time each August and early September. Five lucky winners are drawn each year from thousands of entries.
